- Ticks are more common in wooded, grassy, or highly vegetated areas. However, they are increasingly common in urban or suburban yards. What should you do if you find a tick attached to your pet? Remove the tick carefully.
- Part your dog's hair around the tick with your fingers.
- Place the tweezers around the tick, as close as you can, possibly get to the skin.
- Don't twist or jerk the tick.
- Just pull gently upwards with steady hands, adding pressure until the tick lets you pull it away from the skin.
- Prevent, prevent, prevent!
For dogs, thankfully the same products that are used to kill fleas, Nexgard or Bravecto, will also kill ticks. These products are given monthly or every 3 months and are by prescription only.
